I read the scriptures twice a day, I also read conference talks too. I see it as nourishment for my spirit. There are times when I am reading that I have to check myself and make sure I am taking it all in. It is very easy to become complacent about reading and kind of zone out with it. Yes, I’ve read this before this happens then this happens and well in the end this happens. But that is not it at all. This is time spent in reading and studying from people who lived years ago who saw what is coming our way. If they didn’t they certainly had things happening in their lives that might be applied in our times. I think there are many ways to get a spiritual drought. The first way which everybody knows is just simply not reading scriptures, not saying prayers. The hardest way to live!! The other way of getting a spiritual drought is by doing those things automatically, routinely, without a thought as to anything really. The third way is by becoming so busy that any scripture studying that you do is probably a 2 minute reading with no further thought to anything at all. Any other variations can fall into one of these three ways. Life is difficult there are myriads of challenges and myriads of ways to get through those challenges. So before we come to an area that feels like we are in a drought. Ask yourself these questions, 1.) Can I set time for reading scriptures and saying prayers? 2.) Am I just reading to read and say I did or am I taking it in? 3.) Am I too busy in my life that I am not even thinking about what I read or am I giving myself enough time in the scriptures for it to make sense?
At times I have become lazy with my reading, it doesn’t take much. Just a lot of busy days and busy in the head, overthinking things. In fact, you can really drown out the spirit by doing lots of busy things. Even things that you have to do to that pertain to family life can get in the way. Yes, the drip system which means constantly having some water going. Relating that to real life is reading scripture and thinking about it or thinking about the passage you read or singing a song that references that scripture. That would be a good drip system. In this way we can ward off any drought that could come our way.
