Today I went with a church group to a day of service. There were many things to do, planting flowers and bushes, fixing broken fountains, installing an arbor, and cleaning up debris. It was fun working with the little kids to plant things. I started with complaints, not about going and serving but about lack of coordination and organization. It all turned out beautifully though, with many pretty flowers planted and things cleaned up. We helped a local homeless shelter. I got to talk to the director for a moment. She told me that the majority of the homeless population are not necessarily drug or alcohol abusers. Some people just got caught in a situation of getting behind and then the car breaks down and what happens next they just can’t do it. Some are mentally challenged adults, or mentally ill. Also older adults are finding it harder to live on the meager money they receive. I may not have fixed the world or any of those problems today, but I did help to beautify a small area that the homeless can visit which reminds them that there are people out there who do care enough to take action. When you are in the service of those around you, you really are serving Heavenly Father.
